lol. im a grade 8 ref and i asked a grade 4 about this play. he and i both agreed that it is in fact offsides. according to the 2008 and 2009 rule book it is.
but whatever. netherlands did a great job anyway. they deserved that win.

According to the fifa rules its onside, but fifa after reviewing it said revisions should be made for situations like this. But yes as of game time on that day it is legit.

actually that goal should have…not counted..as panucci went out not on purpose..even if he did…it should still been offside..only difference is panucci would be cautioned with a yellow card..however just to cover up their asses, and the refs asses..fifa ref dept made this so called rule which was never in the rule book..maybe will be in the next edition..trust me..im a famous referee

Then you re a bad ref!
Panicci was not delegated there by the ref(he left the pitch at his own mistake – no foul etc.) therefor he never left the game and he still is an active player. It doesn’t matter that he is outside the pitch. that’s completely irrelevant.

its an odd rule,
if player gets injured by own team he is still in play. and a player cant put himself out of play by stepping outside the field without permission of the refferee.
so it counts..
this rule aint used mtuch cause it barely ever happens, but the refferee and the linesman knew the rule.
